Garden
Steinthal is the oldest garden in the Darjeeling district. A German missionary founded the plantation in 1850. He was the first to cultivate the Chinese tea plant Thea cammelia sinensis instead of Thea chammelia assamica, which is usually grown in India, and thus invented the most sought-after and expensive tea in the world today. The rest is history. With the plantation looking back on more than 150 years of experience, but today working with state-of-the-art technology, it is no wonder that Steinthal is not only the oldest, but today also the best plantation in the Darjeeling region. Pitoresque on a hill in the West Valley, the plantation is situated in a quiet valley about 15 km west of Darjeeling Town. At an altitude of almost 2,000 metres above sea level, about 180 tonnes of top class tea grows on 250 hectares every year.
Sustainability
Since 1999, Steinthal has been part of the Rex Argo Group, which has brought the working and living conditions of the workers into the 21st century. All workers live on the plantation in modern houses. Schools are available free of charge for the next generation. In addition, medical care is provided by the company's own hospital. Recently, a luxurious resort opened its doors on the plantation grounds, opening the door to a tea plantation to the curious.
