The Royal Garden tea garden is located in the Mirik Valley, a quiet valley south of Darjeeling Town. Founded in the middle of the 19th century by a Maharajah, the garden is situated at over 2,000 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest tea gardens in the world. On 320 hectares, nearly 400 workers produce about 350 tons of tea every year. After the last descendant of the founding family died childless in 1989, the plantation is now a member of Golpaldhara The Ltd.
Sustainability
Royal Garden is currently on its way to organic certification. As is customary in Darjeeling, the employees live in modern houses on the plantation. A school is available free of charge for the younger generation. In addition, Golpaldhara provides free medical care.
